Clayhill Halls of Residence

Work carried out

The project was to replace the existing fire alarm system, which consisted of 11 networked fire panels and 1336 detectors, 187 manual call points 907 Sounder beacons. The panels were obsolete and software no longer operational therefore system needed swapping during the summer break to ensure availability for the new students arriving in September. Compass Complete Solutions were asked to advise what could possibly be replaced on the existing system within just a 9 week turnaround.

We proposed to do a complete replacement of all panels and detection etc, utilising our UK Independent Suppliers and Manufacturers: Advanced Fire Alarm Panels, with Hochiki fire detection devices throughout. Most importantly we were required to maintain fire alarm coverage at all times.

Problems faced

With such a tight turnaround the existing system was replaced a loop at a time basis, starting with Admin building, where the “Head-End” panel was located. We then worked away from the Admin building, changing a building at a time until the whole network had been replaced, whilst maintaining a full operational alarm system at all times.

End result

So we completed during University shutdown period the swap-over of all 11 panels 1 additional repeater panel, 1336 detectors 187 manual call points and 907 Sounder beacons were replaced. The systems were tested on completion of each building and then a complete network test was done, and all Bafe certification and manual handover as planned with in the 9 weeks.
